The image to the right is how it looks if made wrong. The video is almost lost in the middle of the to black blocks. It’s not because Facebooks has done anything with it. But as you see to the left Facebook will add a layer behind the video (not visible on mobile) to make it fit a square view. The back layer is a duplicate of the video but made to fit the frame and its blurred.[/fusion_text][fusion_text]To say vertical video is the future video format is a bald statement, and probably not quite true. While Movies and TV will be horizontal, at least for the foreseeing future, videos for most social media we see an increasingly amount of videos using the vertical format. Here it will be the prefered format.

As people spend an increasingly percentage of their online time on a mobile device, so does the importance of mobile first user experience. This should also change how you do video.

Vertical videos gets more views

You have probably experienced that a vertical video is a lot more mobile friendly, then a horizontal one – you don’t have to tilt your phone to get the best view. And because of that viewers will navigate away instead of watching the video if it’s horizontal.

Jon Steinberg, CEO of Daily Mail North America, wrote in a post on Medium that «vertical video ads have up to 9x more completed views than horizontal video ads.» A statement that made Steinberg come to the following conclusion:

Our findings have convinced us that we need to move even more aggressively to develop vertical content, especially on our Snapchat Discover channel, and that our industry must develop creative content for this mobile format.

That’s why you should take vertical video seriously!

Making vertical video

I know the feeling that vertical video is unusual, it seems a bit of, sometimes almost wrong. It’s like that video is supposed to be horizontal. Probably because It’s always been that way. But If you are planning to reach out to people on mobile or want to prepare for the future, you need to start testing it.

There is some issues with vertical video. It’s another way of telling a story, it requires you to think differently. But I’m not going into that here, but check out this amazing video for inspiration!

Filming and posting a single shoot vertical video is easy, just pick up your camera, shoot and post. But if you want to shoot different angles and edit them together and publish it, it often ends up in landscape mode with to big black squares on each side of the video. And that’s even worse than horizontal. We had an work accident with that just before Christmas, that we sadly discovered too late to fix.

So to get to the point, editing vertical videos in the right way. Sadly the infrastructure is bad. At least most free or cheap editing softwares are bad at editing vertical video. There are some more expensive ones that can do it, but I’ll tell you how you can fix it without spending an unnecessary amount of money.

1 Edit as usual, but before you export the movie you need to
